I decided to pick up Superman: Earth One. It is a more current take on Superman—which completely disregards any other Superman stories, requiring no background knowledge. Overall, it was pretty enjoyable. Earth One retells Superman’s origins with a bit of a twist. I enjoyed his connection with his spacecraft, and the villain from Krypton’s neighboring planet seemed like an original take on the destruction of Krypton (though I could be wrong, as I lack Superman knowledge). I think the art is fabulous! The watercolor is beautiful, and I like Clark’s look. He’s kind of scrawny—he still has muscles, but he isn’t particularly tall or massive—and I like his often-glowing eyes and wardrobe choices. I also liked that kryptonite didn’t appear in this story, and the threats to Superman and the world were believable (in a comic book universe way).
I still had a hard time connecting with Clark at first. His main problem is that he wants to do something significant with his life, but he also just wants to be normal. I understand wanting to be normal, but I’ve never had to make career decisions based on being incredibly good at everything I do (I’m still waiting on those offers of six figure salaries). I did start to sympathize with Clark’s loneliness, and I liked how he finally makes a connection with Lois and Jimmy. The story is a little slow paced at first. Clark is experiencing a lot of new things, yet for the most part we don’t know what he thinks or feels about his experiences. The action heats up quickly, but also ends quickly. The resolution to the story (along with a copy of Clark’s interview with Superman), were my favorite parts—finally delving deeper into the characters and hinting at things to come.
I am left with a few questions. There was a lot of set up, but the book didn’t get really good until the end—will there ever be a continuation to this story? I would love to read more. Also, I know there are amazing Superman stories out there, but I don’t know what they are. If you are a Superman fan, will you tell me: What are the best Superman stories to read? Which ones will help me understand who he is, and why he isn’t boring? What’s he got going for himself besides being amazing at everything? I want to like the most iconic superhero of all time, but I’m still working on it. I give this one a Good if you're into that stuff.
